My wife and I were in San Francisco this past year visiting some friends. We took a trip down to the fisherman’s wharf to walk around. I volunteered to drive since I had a rental car and thought it’d be nice for our friends to just relax. As we got near the wharf the streets began to grow more narrow and were lined with people walking along. The tourist in me was looking around enjoying the sites. I turned down one of the roads looking for a parking space only to find it was a “One Way” and I was heading in the wrong direction. The traffic bearing down on us made my mistake fairly obvious. Putting the car into reverse I began to back up only to discover that I was about to run down an entire crosswalk full of people. We survived and enjoyed our time eventually. The lesson I learned that day was to pay attention to the signs.tourist in me was looking around enjoying the sites. In the gospel of John it records many stories of the signs and wonders Jesus performed. John’s gospel concludes by stating the reason why he wrote it. It says:
John 20:30-31 30 Many other signs therefore Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these [signs] have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
The purpose of a sign is to confirm someone’s identity. Jesus would minister to crowds of people all hoping and wanting to believe He was the Messiah. He would often perform signs to confirm the people’s belief in Him. For example:
John 6:2 And a great multitude was following Him, because they were seeing the signs which He was performing on those who were sick.
Jesus was healing the people, but the Bible doesn’t record these as a healing or miracles. It says they were “signs.” The reason is because the works of God He was performing were pointing to the reality that He indeed was the Messiah. This confirmed His identity. God causes “Signs” to accompany His followers as well. This is because He is confirming their identity as His children. This is what the gospel of Mark points to when it says:
Mark 16:17-18 17 “And these signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it shall not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
These works aren’t only for super special Christians. These are Signs which point to the fact that a person is a believer in Jesus. There are many who have never had one of these signs accompany their life simply because they didn’t know it was possible.
If you are a believer in Jesus, then people will get healed if you will simply start to lay hands on them. There are many who are tormented by demonic dreams and affliction and they too will find freedom if you will pray for them. Signs are meant to be following your life. The Father in Heaven wants to affirm your identity as His child. All you need to do is step out in faith.
