I came to Christ as an 8th grader after hearing a message in a church I visited about how to spend time with God every day. I came home so excited that I had a concrete way to connect with the God of the universe that I had just met. I can still remember opening my Bible for the very first
time in my bedroom; it was 5:30am on a cold Monday morning. What before had seemed like a religious book on my shelf that I was embarrassed to even open was now an invitation to get to know Someone that I was beginning to fall in love with.
I started in Genesis 1:1 and began slowly working my way through the Old Testament. The preacher in the church I had visited told us to use the acronym SPACE PETS to study the Bible. As an 8th grader, thinking about pets in space did catch my attention and, everyday, I’d refer to it to see which of these things I could find in the chapter that I read:
Sin to confess
Promise to claim
Attitude to change
Command to obey
Example to follow
Prayer to pray
Error to avoid
Truth to obey
Something to praise God for
Eventually I figured out that the best way for me to connect with the Lord was a Bible reading plan. Everyday I would find one thing to apply to my daily life from what I read, write it down, and read over it while I was in school.
Even though, at that time, I didn’t go to church or have anyone teaching me, God met me daily through His word and began to lay a foundation for my life in Him. When I look back at those times I realize how precious they were and it makes me appreciate God’s faithfulness to reveal Himself to an 8th grader through Space Pets and a Bible.
